DMT, scientifically known as N,N-Dimethyltryptamine, is a psychoactive alkaloid found naturally in a variety of plants and animals, ranging from simple aquatic life forms to advanced and intelligent terrestrial mammals. It’s the key psychoactive ingredient in Ayahuasca, a ceremonial drink made primarily from the Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis plants, among others. Indigenous communities in the Amazon have revered and used Ayahuasca in spiritual practices for centuries, if not millennia.

In modern times, DMT is often consumed in its crystalline or “freebase” form, either smoked using traditional methods like pipes and bongs, or via contemporary vaporizer cartridges. This method offers a profound, albeit brief, hallucinogenic experience, widely regarded as one of the most powerful psychedelic journeys known to humans.

Interestingly, DMT serves as a foundational molecule for several other psychedelics, such as psilocybin (4-PO-HO-DMT). Its structure shares similarities with essential neurotransmitters like serotonin and melatonin, enabling it to interact with 5-HT (serotonin) receptors and induce its notable effects.

A point of confusion for some is the distinction between N,N-DMT and 5-MeO-DMT, or 5-Methoxy-N,N-Dimethyltryptamine. Although 5-MeO-DMT closely resembles N,N-DMT in structure, the addition of a few atoms creates a difference. Despite their chemical likeness, the resulting experiences from each can be markedly distinct.

The DMT Experience

DMT activates its psychoactive properties at doses starting from 0.2 mg/kg. When vaporized or smoked, DMT acts rapidly, reaching the height of its effects within 2 to 4 minutes post-consumption, and typically concluding after 15 to 20 minutes. However, when ingested orally as part of the ayahuasca brew, it can take up to an hour for effects to manifest, potentially lasting for as long as 12 hours. It’s worth noting that DMT by itself lacks oral psychoactivity, meaning consuming or snorting it directly won’t induce any effects. But, when paired with Banisteriopsis caapi, which acts as an MAO inhibitor, its oral psychoactive properties are unlocked.

Introducing DMT to vape pen liquids is a contemporary ingestion method with the advantage of convenience. The potency of a DMT experience hinges on dosage. Vaping can induce hallucinations as intense, if not more so, than traditional methods, provided the right dosage is achieved quickly, which might necessitate multiple draws from the vaporizer.

Lower doses of DMT (0.05 to 0.1 mg/kg), translating to roughly 10-20mg of its freebase form for most individuals, predominantly influence physical and emotional states, with minimal hallucinogenic perceptions. On the other hand, higher doses (2.0 to 3.0 mg/kg) or between 30-40mg of freebase DMT for the average person, lead to vibrant, dynamic kaleidoscopic visions adorned with deeply hued abstract designs. While auditory hallucinations do occur, they are rarer and usually not the standout feature of the experience. High doses often yield out-of-body experiences, distinguishing them as a signature trait of an intense DMT journey.

In “The Spirit Molecule,” a 2000 publication by psychedelic researcher Rick Strassman, experiments revealed that around half of the participants recounted interactions with beings referred to as “entities,” “guides,” or “aliens.” Terrence McKenna, an ethnobotanist, coined the term “machine elves” for these entities. As per Strassman’s findings, these beings manifest as an array of forms, including “clowns, reptiles, and bees,” to name a few. They are frequently portrayed in online discussions as constructed from geometric designs.

DMT Pharmacology

Dimethyltryptamine is primarily a serotonin (5-HT) receptor agonist, with the highest affinity for the 5-HT2A receptor in specific. It does affect many other receptor types (including dopamine and sigma receptors), but the consequences of these interactions are not well understood.

In a study that administered low, medium, or high doses to 12 volunteers, the psychedelic threshold for DMT was found to be 0.2 mg/kg. At this level, most biological effects were detectably altered. Adrenocorticotropin hormone, beta-endorphin, prolactin, growth hormone (GH), and cortisol were all elevated. Pupil diameter, heart rate, and blood pressure all peaked within 2 minutes of administration, as did subjective experiences. A later trial found that the body does not build a tolerance to DMT, meaning there’s no need to take more to repeat the same effects, unlike other psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin.

DMT Interactions

DMT significantly affects the serotonin system and should not be taken simultaneously with any of the following substances:
